What is Neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback teaches the brain to improve important functions like attention, mood, behavior, cognition, and more. Sensors are applied to the client’s scalp and the EEG signal from the brain is amplified and monitored via computer. This signal is then mirrored back to the client through computer software. There is an immediate reward or challenge to the brain through visual and/or auditory feedback that is often presented as a game or video. Once these healthier brain patterns are practiced and learned, these changes become permanent and often reduce or eliminate the need for many medications.

Brain Wave 101

Brain waves are the result of electrical activity in the brain. This electrical activity is used by the brain to carry information within the brain, so that optimum brain functioning may take place. While each lobe and structure of the brain is responsible for specialized behaviors and functions, they must work together to carry out complex functions. Information carried by the brain’s electrical activity must move rapidly within the brain so that it is not lost.  If this does not occur efficiently, the result is a loss of vital information and a whole host of symptoms.

Delta 1 - 4 hz

Delta 1 – 4 hz

Delta brainwaves are commonly associated with deep sleep.  High amplitude Delta waves in adults are often a result of brain injury.

Theta 4 - 7 hz

Theta 4 – 7 hz

Theta brain waves are associated with creativity, emotionality, and spontaneity. These waves also allow for memory and story integration and processing. This brain wave is also thought to be part of our spiritual mind. Theta in excess is linked to foggy thinking, impulsivity, poor decision making and slow reactions.  Excess Thetas in the frontal lobes are associated with ADHD, daydreaming, distractibility, and anxiety.

Alpha 8 - 12 hz

Alpha 8 – 12 hz

Some call this the “pot” brain wave.  Alpha is associated with being chilled out, relaxed in a meditative state.  This brain wave is essential for being able to drift off to sleep. Alpha should be highest in the back of the brain with the eyes closed and links the conscious to the subconscious. Excessively high amplitude Alpha can indicate depression in children and in adults, especially when it occurs in the left frontal lobe.  Excess Alpha is also implicated in ADHD.

Beta 12 - 20 hz

Beta 12 – 20 hz

Beta brain waves are our alert, focused, learning waves.  For an adult, Beta is usually a bit higher on the left side of the brain compared to the right, and should be more focused in the frontal lobes as opposed to the back of the brain.  If there is an excess Beta in the right hemisphere, it is associated with anxiety, OCD, agitation, stress, and insomnia.

High Beta 20 - 40 hz

 High Beta 20 – 40 hz

High beta waves are associated with racing thoughts, worry, fear, addictions, but also seen in states of peak performance.

Meet Your Brain!

The Brain is about 3 lbs of Jello like substance containing 1.1 trillion cells including 160 billion neurons.  Each neuron has approximately 5000 synaptic connections with other neurons.  The neurons connect through bursts of neuro-transmitters.  These chemical bursts tell neighboring neurons when to fire.  Neurons fire up to 50 times per second.  This is a lot of chemical/electrical activity!

If we plot those neuronal firings on a graph at 256 – 4000 samples per second and connect the dots, we see “brain waves”!

When it comes to neurons…what fires together wires together and becomes a pattern. If things get wired together ineffectively due to developmental issues, illness, neglect, abuse, trauma, head injury, chemotherapy, or a host of other events, the individual will experience correlated symptoms.

One may feel stressed, stuck, agitated or out of control.  When these neuronal patterns do not serve us well, we must allow our brains to be re-taught to fire in a way that is more functional and desirable.  This is why Neurofeedback is such a powerful tool.  It enables us to change our brain and change our lives.
